As you can see, I have tried most of the popular guidebooks when preparing for our travels.
Most of them are great sources of information, however I have come to learn that it separates into two categories:
Which travel guide book would I use to plan my trip?
Which travel guide book should I have in my back pocket when we are touring our destination city?
Your choices are varied, from Frommer’s to DK Eyewitness Guides to Fodor’s to Rick Steves.
I have found that, when planning a trip, it’s not which book has the prettiest pictures, but which book has the most useful information and content.
I have found that when planning a trip, I use the Rick Steves guides. Rick shares my passion for history, and I rely on his information a great deal. He provides information and insight not only into the obvious highlights of the region, but he also shares his views and opinions on the “hidden” areas of the region. I rely on his books a great deal when planning my trips. From hotels, to restaurants to sites to see, my choice is the Rick Steves Guides.
When the planning is done, and when you hit the streets in your destination city, you need a small thin guide that you can slip into your back pocket and use and consult as you travel. I have found that the DK Top 10 travel guides are my go-to guides when I am in the region and need information quickly.
The guides are sturdy, well constructed, contain lots of relevant information and maps, and break the information down into the top 10 in various categories, which allows you to satisfy the priorities of every person in your travel group. They contain a wealth of information easily accessible as you travel. They also include maps and metro guides, which can be invaluable.
My advice would be to read all of the reviews on Amazon, and settle on a guide-book that meets your criteria.
For me, it would be Rick Steves and the DK Top 10 Guidebooks.
I also use the Rick Steves phrase books when traveling in countries where I do not speak the language. They fit in your back pocket, and they have saved the day on a number of occasions.
