I am referring to the Cable TV or Satellite TV cord.
There has been much written about how people on a budget can save significant money each month by cancelling their cable tv or satellite tv service and in it’s place installing a media receiver such as the Roku or Apple TV. You would also have to invest in a digital antenna in order to access your local over the air channels.
If we look at the math, the scenario is is follows:
Average monthly cable tv bill = $100.00 ( Not including your internet service which you would still require.)
You would need to purchase either a Roku or Apple TV or similar = One time cost $100.00
One time digital antenna cost = $50.00
Netflix service = $8.00 per month
Hulu Plus service = $8.00 per month
The first year your cost would be as follows:
Roku or Apple TV = $100.00 / 12 months = $8.33 per month
Digital Antenna = $50.00 / 12 months = $4.17 per month
Netflix = $8.00 per month
Hulu Plus = $8.00 per month
1st year cost per month = $28.50
Your 2nd year cost per month would be $16.00 per month vs. Cable at $100.00 per month or whatever your personal plan costs.
There are alternatives to the Apple TV and the Roku, such as Google Chromecast, but I have only purchased and tested the Roku and the Apple TV.
So I will limit my opinions to those two units.
I give a slight edge to the Roku as it currently carries more channels, although the Apple TV is adding more all the time.
Both units set up easily and feature high quality digital picture.
Cutting the cord is not for everyone, and if you are not tech savvy or don’t have access to someone who is, you may want to stick with cable or satellite. But if you like to tinker, love a challenge, and want to save some money to boot, then this may be something you get a great deal of satisfaction from tackling.
Make no mistake about it, you have to work a little harder finding the programs you like on either Roku or Apple TV, but most of them are there. And you will need a strong internet signal as both the Apple TV and the Roku stream from the internet.
But if you don’t mind a little work, you can save some serious money each month.
