We will be embarking on my top “bucket list” trip sometime in August. We will travel to London and Liverpool.
I am in the planning stage now, which is a bit late for me historically, but some medical issues required that I wait until the end of June to book our trip.
Whenever I plan a trip to Europe, I do my research on various sites that I trust to provide me with honest practical information.
Since this trip is to London and Liverpool, I will utilize the following websites:
Holiday Inn Hotels I am using points acquired by staying at IHG properties.
US Airways Because Charlotte NC is a US Airways hub.
By consulting all of the above sites, I will be able to acquire the information I need to be able to feel comfortable with all aspects of the trip.
Try to gather as much information as you can, especially with transportation. It’s not a good feeling when you get off the plane in a foreign country and you have no idea what to do next. Planning ahead will allow you to feel safe and confident when you arrive. You will know exactly where to go to get on the train or rent a car or take the subway.
YouTube is a great resource. Lots of videos of airports, train stations and subway systems provided by people just like you who made the same trip as you. Extremely helpful!
Keep in mind, trip pricing can change in a matter of minutes.
I was ready to book this trip a few days ago.
I went online, selected my flight and hotel in London through Travelocity and the price was $2542.00 for roundtrip air and 3 nights hotel in London. When I clicked on the link to finalize and pay, I was informed that while I was “shopping”, the price of the trip had risen to over $4200.00. An increase of over $1700.00. Why? Because US Airways had increased the price of the flight. This was in a matter of five minutes. Needless to say, I did not book the trip. I’m sure it will go down to a more reasonable price in the near future, at which time I will book the trip.
We will be flying into London, taking the train to Liverpool.
We will stay in Liverpool 3 nights then take the train back to London.
It would be easier to fly into Manchester, then take a one hour local train to Liverpool, but the air fare to Manchester from Charlotte is prohibitive.
Travelocity allows you to book a hotel for a partial stay. Therefore we will fly into London, take the train to Liverpool. We will book our own hotel in Liverpool through IHG Hotel Group, then take the train back to London, where we will see some sites that we didn’t get to see on our last trip to London. We will tour Buckingham Palace, and perhaps a day trip or two.
Once I finalize the trip, I will post more details that you might find helpful.
If you pre-plan and learn as much as you can about your destination cities, you will feel more confident and less susceptible to the unknown.
As you can see from the above, I had to research several different flight scenarios and transportation issues to arrive at the most practical solution for us.
